Deer Hide Journals

Seed beads and porcupine quills on raw deer hide, 2020.

Centering beadwork and quillwork as a method of visual journaling, this work is an ongoing collaborative project that creatively explores the reciprocal notion of care between land and maker. Through continual acts of visiting, intentional stitchwork, and gestures of care shared over a period of two weeks, the creative process of this piece gently breaks away from Western temporalities and re-centres Indigenous notions of time and relation to place.

This work was started as a resident of Contingencies of Care, a virtual two-week residency held in June 2020 exploring the notion of care and co-hosted by OCAD University, University of British Columbia Okanagan, BUSH Gallery and Toronto Biennial of Art.
