Aaniish mnik aawiyin wiisaakdokewinini?

Seeds beads on canvas, 2019.

A couple years ago I was asked by a settler “How Indigenous are you?” when referring to my Halfbreed identity. Centring language and beadwork as a methodology of resistance, my answer is presented in Anishinaabemowin as a rhetorical question directed towards the settler audience. This piece facilitates dialogue around identity discourse, blood percentage as a colonial form of Indigenous erasure and how Indigenous identity should not be questioned as something quantifiable.
